Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB)

This family of rare-earth transition metal alloys has the highest energy product of any permanent magnet coupled with coercivities ranging from 12KOe to as high as 30KOe. Many devices that once used Alnico or ceramic have been replaced by neodymium magnets due to its high energy.

Aluminum Nickel Cobalt (AlNiCo)

Alnico is the oldest family of permanent magnets, having been made and used since 1930’s. It is produced in both cast and sintered forms. The grades range from 2.0 MGOe to 9.0 MGOe. The most commonly used grades are cast Alnico 5 and Alnico 6 with Alnico 8 and Alnico 9 being premium grades. Sintered Alnico 8, Sintered Alnico 6 and Sintered Alnico 5 lend themselves to being used for applications where there are the smaller and less complicated geometries.

Ceramic (Hard Ferrite)

Ceramic is one of the oldest and least expensive types of permanent magnets. Out of all the permanent magnets available, Ceramic magnets have the lowest range of energy product. They are made from Strontium or Barium Ferrites, both in sintered and bonded forms. The energy product ranges from 1 MGOe to 5 MGOe with the former bring sintered or bonded, isotropic, and the latter being sintered and anisotropic.

Samarium Cobalt (SmCo)

Samarium alloys are produced in sintered as well as bonded forms. Sintered Samarium Cobalt magnets have an energy product ranging from 18 to 30 MGOe. This alloy has the highest energy product combined with very high Curie Temperatures and excellent physical characteristics. The content of Cobalt in this family of alloys is more than 70%, making the alloy one of the most expensive families of permanent magnets.
